Another One for the Trash Bin

The Browns quickly gave up on their man in Brady Quinn and have moved on. 35-year-old Jake Delhomme is set to be the head man for the team this year with Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace waiting in the wings. Delhomme had a dysmal year for the Panthers last year. After starting poorly, he went on the injured reserve for the remainder of the season. Odds are Delhomme goes down again or doesn’t play well and gets replaced by Wallace or even give McCoy a shot. After all, what does this team have to lose?

The Browns haven’t really done much else to improve their squad over last year’s poor outing. Josh Cribbs is still there, so maybe he can return some more kicks for them. That will be the highlight of their season just about.

The Browns will once again finish dead last in the AFC North with a 4-12 record.

Will the Browns Ever Get Out of Last Place?

The AFC North is going to be a tough division this season. The Bengals and Ravens are both expected to have great teams. The Steelers are kind of up in the air and the Browns have improved a little as well. Who will finish at the top of the division? Read on to find out.

4. Cleveland Browns: The Browns have moved on once again at the quarterback position with Jake Delhomme. The Browns gave Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson a chance over the last two years and neither one of them made it back to the team this season. Quinn was traded to the Broncos for fullback Peyton Hillis and a sixth round draft pick, and Anderson was released and picked up by the Cardinals. The Browns are hoping to get things right for once with Delhomme leading the way. Delhomme, the long time Panthers quarterback, hit rock bottom last season. After having a miserable start to the 2009 season, Delhomme went on the injured reserved list with a broken finger for the rest of the season. While he was out backup Matt Moore showed that he was cut out to start for the Panthers going 4-1 in his starts beating the Giants, Vikings, and Saints.
Other than adding Delhomme, the Browns didn’t really do much else in improving their team. Their wide receivers aren’t that good with the youngster Mohamed Massaquoi leading the bunch and behind him Josh Cribbs, who is more known for his record breaking kick returns.
The Browns are also lacking in talent on defense, with only a few bright spots in their cornerbacks Sheldon Brown and Eric Wright. On the defensive line the only guy that is reliable is the veteran Shaun Rogers and at the middle linebacker position D’Qwell Jackson. Other than that the Browns look like they will be a last place team once again. I’m starting to think that it was a mistake letting them come back into the league. I predict that they will only have four wins this season finishing at 4-12.

Delhomme wants to start for Browns

Quarterback Jake Delhomme completed his visit to Cleveland last week and drove to the airport for a flight to New Orleans. He never made it.

Travel delays forced Delhomme to return to Charlotte, N.C., where he chose to sign with the Browns without visiting his hometown Saints. The chance to start was more important than being a backup in his home state.

Delhomme, who grew up in Breaux Bridge, La., and spent his first five years with the Saints, would have been a backup to Drew Brees with the Super Bowl champions. In Cleveland, he is the favorite to win the starting job after team president Mike Holmgren and the Browns parted ways with Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.

Delhomme’s main competition will be Seneca Wallace, whom the Browns acquired in a trade with Seattle.

Browns receiver Cribbs likely vs. Lions

Eric Mangini expects Josh Cribbs to play when the Cleveland Browns go against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Cribbs was strapped to a backboard and carted off the field after the last play of the Browns’ 16-0 loss to Baltimore on Monday night. He was briefly hospitalized with a possible neck injury and concussion.

Mangini says all of the measures taken with Cribbs were precautionary and that all the tests came back negative.

Mangini plays coy with starting QB

Browns coach Eric Mangini has returned to his secretive ways with his starting quarterback.

Mangini said Monday that he will wait until Wednesday to announce whether Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn will start next Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens. During Cleveland’s bye week, Mangini said he would reveal his starter early this week.

Mangini said he knows where he is headed on the decision but has not yet spoken to his two quarterbacks.

Cribbs disputes Internet story

If Joshua Cribbs is a fan of the Web site profootballtalk.com, he might not be a regular visitor to the site in the future.

On the site’s home page Tuesday were a series of headlines, including one that read: “Cribbs not happy with Cleveland fans.”

The short story that followed said Browns’ fans were chanting, “Go, Pack, Go” near the end of the Packers’ 31-3 win in Cleveland Browns Stadium last Sunday. It was actually many of the large number of Packers’ fans in attendance who were chanting.

Cribbs, in a Tribune Chronicle story, said, “I hate it. It hurts when I hear that. I almost want to run up in the stands and boo with our fans. It reminded me of a couple of years back when Pittsburgh came in here and they overwhelmed our stadium. That should never happen, especially in Browns town. I don’t care how bad we’re doing. This is Browns town.”

Anderson calls his stats ‘garbage’

As personal policy, Browns quarterback Derek Anderson isn’t looking at his statistics. He knows they’re not pretty.

“I honestly know they are garbage,” he said Wednesday. “I haven’t looked at them since I started playing.”

Good thing. Anderson is currently the lowest-rated quarterback in the NFL with a 40.6 mark. In Anderson’s last three games, he has completed 23 of 70 passes.

Anderson, though, feels he has learned more this season — his fifth — than during any in his career. He’s grateful for the support he has received from coach Eric Mangini, who is sticking with him despite a 1-3 mark since replacing Brady Quinn as Cleveland’s starter.

Cleveland Browns are at the center of the NFL trade universe

Will the Browns add to their stockpile of picks in the 2010 draft by swinging another deal before today’s 4 o’clock NFL trade deadline?

The prominent names mentioned in rumors have been quarterback Brady Quinn, specialist Josh Cribbs and defensive end Corey Williams.

Not-so-prominent rumors have posed trade possibilities involving linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, nose tackle Shaun Rogers, and, yes, even left tackle Joe Thomas.

Why are the Browns the subject of so many rumors? That’s obvious. Coach Eric Mangini has not been shy about pulling the trigger on trades to rid his locker room of players not with his program.
